This is much more of a satire of filmmaking than it is of religion, but no matter what it is, it's sly, understated, and funny. . . . And God Spoke follows the satiric principles set forth in This is Spinal Tap--a bunch of clueless but utterly earnest people bumble through showbiz--and moves it to Hollywood. Simple as that. The humor in . . . And God Spoke derives from structure and situations, including a very funny scene in which the filmmakers find themselves unable to afford twelve apostles and are forced to go with only eight. And I love the way the film ended--it's hilariousness lies in just how very true to life it is. (Nov 22, 1999)
