April Fool's Day has a slow start, which is fine for even a horror film, as long as it has interesting characters. Whoops. And, as a result, when the film takes these interchangeable characters and attempts to develop them, it doesn't work. Director Fred Walton is capable of better work--his The Rosary Murders, made just the next year, was a tight work--but here it seems as though he doesn't know what he's doing. The movie goes forward with amazingly formulaic plotting that manages to be both predictable and nonsensical simultaneously. Bonus points for the ending, but the whole thing is still just annoying.
