Series info

Part of the Evil Dead series.

· Sequel to The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II.
· Read a review of the soundtrack.
· About "Evil Dead IV": although Raimi and Campbell would like to do one, AoD simply didn't make enough money to push anyone to fund a sequel. If there was one, however, it would be more horrorific than AoD. Furthermore, it's unclear as to which AoD ending any Evil Dead IV would follow--the post-apocalyptic or the S-Mart ending. Campbell prefers the former, saying that Ash could always fight robots in the future.
· SFX are covered in The Men Behind the Army.
· The making of the film is covered in The Evil Dead Companion.
· The mentality of Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness was translated into a video game, Evil Dead: Hail to the King.
Information
· There are at least four versions of this film. The shortest one has been on videotape in the US for the last few years. A 96-minute version--the Director's Cut--was shown in Europe, and was released on US video in 1999. Another version appears elsewhere (notably in Japan). The longest version of the film is shown from time to time in the US on the Sci-Fi Channel.
· The ending of the version of AoD released in US theaters is actually a second ending; the original ending, was shown in Europe and is now available in newer US videos of the film.

Synopsis
Ash, that stalwart idiot from Evil Dead 2, finds himself adrift in medieval England. To get back to his own time, he must go on a quest to retrieve the powerful (but nastily evil) Book of the Dead, known to its friends as the Necronomicon. Between him and the book, though, is an army of undead soldiers, and on his side are only a bunch of Brits and Scots, a shotgun, an old GM, and his uniquely prepubescent wit. Groovy.

Goddamn groovy indeed. Army of Darkness caps off the only film series in my memory that not only explores new area with each film but keeps a stellar and unique quality. If The Evil Dead was a fairly serious and scary zombie flick and Evil Dead 2 was a fearlessly inventive horror satire, then Army is almost completely a spoof, of both the series itself and at least a couple of film genres. The energy level rarely lets up, and neither do the brilliant set pieces, gags, and classic one-liners. Bruce Campbell takes his mugging to new, hilarious heights--the guy is amazing--and Sam Raimi shows little restraint in his directing while managing to stay just this side of silliness. The special effects are wonderfully corny and blatantly recall films like Jason and the Argonauts--they're a real treat. Watch this with a bunch of friends and a couple of beers. A couple of beers apiece, you primates.

Just for the record: I think the original (or European) ending suits the story (and Ash's character) better. But I think the American S-Mart ending is one of the funniest things ever put on film . . . so I'm going with that one.
