A doctor will be permitted to take a new post only if he can determine the identity of the former head of the asylum--who is now one of the patients. Each patient tells the new doctor their story, tales that include: a dismembered corpse may be attempting to take revenge, a tailor makes a supernatural suit, a mentally ill woman tries to escape her home with the help of her elusive sister, and a man claims he has developed a way to transfer his consciousness into a doll.

Like the woman said in Beetlejuice, "Not bad, not bad." But also not great. Anthologies have never really enthralled me, and this one, although it is well-made, is predictable. The first story has a good number of scares, and is, interestingly, filled with subtleties of characterization. The second story is perhaps not quite as good but is still atmospheric and interesting. Unfortunately, the third story is utterly predictable and the fourth, as it isn't told in flashback like the others, totally disrupts the film's flow. Still, worth a watch as a decent example of its kind. (Jul 15, 1999) | ||||||
