The Attic is really a rather strange movie. Although I'm sure most, if not all, video stores would put it in the horror section, it doesn't really belong there, at least not until the very end. It does fit quite comfortably, however, under the category of psychodrama, for that's where its strength lies--as a portrait of a truly repressed and sad woman. Carrie Snodgress and Ray Milland give accomplished performances, aided by a script that is interesting yet banal at times, a combination that lends the film a good degree of verisimilitude. On the other hand, Ms. Snodgress's murderous fantasies get tiresome after a while, and it could be argued that some of the film's subplots don't tie together very well. I prefer to think of them as just parts of a whole, however. It isn't until the last couple of scenes in the film that the horror really kicks in. Although I wouldn't call what happens at that point altogether shocking (hints are dropped all throughout the picture), the final scene is an appropriate payoff to the events of the movie.
