Frequently Asked Questions

What is this site?
This site is a forum for people to tell others what they think about horror films. You can read the opinions of others about a film, post your own thoughts, or do other things. Basically, it's intended to expose people to films they may never have heard of and might be interested in.

So what movies qualify for this site?
Well, just about any film that is listed in the "horror" section of your local video store. In addition, films like Batman, which features extensive gothic imagery, qualify, as do films that deal with the supernatural (as overtly as Field of Dreams or even as obliquely as the filmmaking satire . . . And God Spoke). Other films, such as the psychodrama Honeymoon, have packaging that indicates they're horror films, but really are not; they are also included in the site. If you're not sure about a film, give it a shot anyway.

  • Comedic horror (Re-Animator)
  • Documentary (Castle Ghosts of Scotland, Terror in the Aisles)
  • ESP (Smilla's Sense of Snow)
  • Ghost (The Changeling)
  • Gothic (Batman)
  • Horror-looking (Honeymoon)
  • Magic (Last Action Hero)
  • Monster (The Unseen)
  • Slasher (Slaughter High)
  • Spiritual (Field of Dreams)
  • Stretches (. . . And God Spoke)
  • Vampire (Lake of Dracula)
  • Zombie (Dawn of the Dead)

Will you add more movies to the site?
Sure--I'll add movies as you suggest them to me. I also have a bunch of videos at home--dozens--that qualify for this site but that I haven't watched yet. I'd watch them full-time (well, part time, at least) if this site was my bread and butter, but I have to go to work, too.

How often is the site updated?
The site is updated when the webmaster's able to do so--he has a job now.

Do you, the webmaster, write reviews?
You bet--I wouldn't miss out on it. This site started out with several dozen reviews, all written by me, and I'm hoping it will almost maintain itself from there. I'll put my reviews at the top of each page--I'm taking that much of a liberty--but my reviews are not weighed more heavily than anyone else's.

So who the hell are you?
Just a horror fan, like yourself.

So what's with the merchandising?
Well, in association with Amazon.com, I've tried to make as many films as possible available for purchase. They're available in a variety of formats, including DVD, VHS, and Laserdisc (which is becoming rapidly extinct, it seems). Where possible, I've also linked to books related to the movies--novelizations, makings-of, and the sort. And yes, I receive a small commission for each sale, though the amount for each differs due to several variables. For more information, check out the Amazon.com legal information. Any title may not be available at any time--that's out of my hands.

Why don't you make movies available for rental?
I would like nothing more than to provide links to Reel.com on each movie's page, so you could rent films. Unfortunately, Reel "discontinued" their rental program in late 1998. Besides, you can always rent a film at your local video store, while you might not be able to purchase one nearby. I may institute this program at some point in the future, however.

What's the deal with the subgenres?
Subgenres are the categories the film falls into--within horror, that is. For instance, Mr. Frost, a film about psychological tension and technological debate between a doctor and a man who may be Satan, falls into the subgenres of "psychological" and "technology vs. supernature." Halloween would be "slasher" and "teenage." And so on. Subgenres are also used to assist in the JavaScript search page. At first, I included every category a film might fall into, but that got to be too cumbersome, so I'm just listing the two primary subgenres of any film. These, like every other aspect of this site, are subject to change.

Why are some of the movie years off?
I get dates from a variety of sources--the Internet Movie Database, Creature Features, The Leonard Maltin Movie/Video Guide, and other sources. Some sources seem to quote the year the film was made, others the year the film was released. I prefer the latter--if you have any corrections, don't hesitate to submit them.

Why do some reviewers have URLs with their reviews?
If a person submits a review--one that they've written, of course--that is already on the web, I will allow them to include a URL of the site that contains the review.
