By making most of the Army of Darkness score just a little overblown, composer Joe LoDuca shows that he's in on the joke while still keeping a straight face. Because he's not afraid to venture into traditional adventure scoring and yet keeps his hold on the conventions of horror and comedy, LoDuca turned out an album that includes a wildly disparate array of styles. "Building the Deathcoaster" fits well into the working/researching tradition of film scoring (I call it "library music"), "Ash Splits" presents an unexpected jig, and "Little Ashes" could have been taken, appropriately enough, from Looney Tunes or (probably more accurately, considering the tastes of the talents behind the movies) from the Stooges. Some of the music, notably "Night Court," has a medieval flair, and "The Forest of the Dead" captures a sense of awe of the supernatural that reminded me of Indiana Jones. And that's just half the album. LoDuca also receives an assist from Danny Elfman, whose "March of the Dead" is brasher than LoDuca's work, but it works well in the album and movie. This is an album that's definitely grown on me.
