Though the sound quality in this album is a little subdued and muffled, the energy of the performances is present. Of course, whoever selected the pieces picked the best parts of the scores--the Psycho score is actually aided by its truncation, which limits the score's repetitve nature. Herrmann's classic score for Vertigo is presented with subtle style, and Marnie is here in all its sweep, though while composing that last score Herrmann might have done better to remember that Marnie is a psychodrama, not a melodrama. Lastly, though I'm not qualified to say whether or not Herrmann necessarily influenced composers like John Williams and Danny Elfman, the similarities are definitely there--Torn Curtain sounds like vintage Williams and the first track in Fahrenheit 451 could easily be taken for Elfman.
