Five years ago, the incessant commercials for Tales from the Hood put just as much focus on selling the soundtrack album as they did on promoting the film, and that struck me as, well, wrong. It made it seem as if the film was an afterthought, as if it existed for the sole purpose of selling its own soundtrack. And by no means am I pointing out Tales from the Hood as the only example of this misappropriation of priorities. There's a bit of the same going on with the Blair Witch 2 soundtrack; instead of shaping a product that tries to evoke the atmosphere of the movie, the folks that put this thing together are apparently more wrapped up in what they think will sell. Good thing I picked up a promo copy.
This album is almost pure metal overload; one track seems to meld into the next with only a few taking on character. A few stand out, though: "Suicide is Painless," album executive producer Marilyn Manson's remake (of all things) the MASH theme, is great--it got under my skin in a quietly invasive way. "Dragula" by Rob Zombie is a great track, to be sure, but I've heard it about a million times, and its inclusion here just seems lazy. Steaknife's "Tommy (Don't Die)," despite subject matter that has little to do with the film, matched its tone nicely, and "Feel Good Hit of the Summer," despite a tone that has little to do with the film, matched its subject matter nicely. Finally, Godhead's "The Reckoning" is a fantastic track, and the only one I listen to months after I bought this disc. Its pulsing ferocity fits perfectly the mood and tone of the film, and its narrative, which evokes not only the mind of the Witch herself but also the very concept of victimization, is nothing less than terrifying. If only the soundtrack had included another song that, like "The Reckoning," played over the film's closing credits--Poe's incredible, etherial "Haunted." By taking the persona of the film's victims, "Haunted" is, in a strange way, a flipside version of "The Reckoning" that fits the character of the movie equally as well. I can only hope that a very good reason kept that great piece of music from this soundtrack.
