Writing this review I suddenly realised how many Doctor Who stories feature elements in horror. I guess it's one of the best ways of creating atmosphere and scaring people. The dark, gothic TV adventures were always the best. Anyway, Land of the Dead deals with the awakening of a violent, ancient force though this time it has little intelligence. The threat of the undead-like creatures is simply that they're hungry and that the people are meat, which instantly removes the need of a decent plot. Also, since none of the villains in this audio story have voices, characters come out with unintentially hilarious lines like, "look, it's chewing his arm!" and "It's 4 foot wide and 3 metres from me." As it is, it's a TV show without pictures and the weakest production by Big Finish to date. (Feb 18, 2001) | |
