Listening to the Ghostbusters II soundtrack in 2002, nearly thirteen years after the release of the movie, reveals an album that is somewhat dated but is an enjoyable listen thanks to a few songs that stand the test of time. Bobby Brown and New Edition contribute three tracks between them, and that's what seems the most dated; eighties-style R&B announces itself as being from a certain era, and I didn't like it much even then. Run-D.M.C.'s rap remake of Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" fares better, but that might well be due more to nostalgia than anything else (I loved the song when I was twelve). "Spirit," by Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew, with its eerie undertone and sharp delivery, still works nicely, and "Love is a Cannibal" is vintage Elton John, using an upbeat melody to provide a counterpoint to serious lyrics. However, as an admirer of the Mystic Knights, I have to say that Oingo Boingo's "Flesh 'N Blood" is my favorite song on the album, a deceptively catchy screed against nothing less than death itself. If features a fluid chorus set against percussion-highlighted verses, both supporting Danny Elfman's rich vocals.
