Kate Winslet's first single, from the animated Christmas Carol: The Movie, doesn't break any new ground; it's rooted firmly in pop-musical tradition. It even progresses like some of the more popular songs of romantic loss in recent memory, from a beginning that features its singer with light instrumentals to a finale with sweeping orchestral accompaniment. The lyrics, also, are nothing spectacular, dealing, as is typical for songs of this type, with difficult choices that had to be made and the pain that resulted from them.
However, I respect songs that exhibit self-knowledge, that have no pretentions to being anything greater than what they are. "What If" isn't a howl of pained love like Poe's "Haunted," it's a power ballad that just pushes the right buttons. And it benefits from its singer. Kate Winslet's unexpectedly lovely voice gets across a range of emotions that many more seasoned singers are unable to lend their works. She layers the simplistic lyrics with a believability and a longing that they might have lacked. Far from a vanity project, "What If" is nothing new, but it is something good.
