This is as just about as good as this type of movie can get, folks . . . Batman is a fantastic comic book movie, wonderfully directed by (a somewhat restrained) Tim Burton and with Anton Furst's unforgettable set design. Michael Keaton may be overshadowed by Jack Nicholson's ferociously funny performance as the Joker, but he is wonderful in the title role, balancing humor and seriousness as only he seems to be able to do. Though the movie doesn't have the most complicated plot, the characters and the film's issues of duality--always implied, never pushed upon us--are outstanding. Lastly, Danny Elfman's score--with its interwoven, dark themes--is one of the best in memory. (Mar 1, 1999) | ||||||
The role of Vicki Vale was originally given to Sean Young, who broke her leg early in production, in a horseriding scene ironically not included in the final film.
Is followed by Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin.
