My wife pushed to rent this one just because we could not believe a movie would so blatantly rip another movie--right on the box. I mean, the cover of Bloody Murder features a big guy, in a jump suit, with a hockey mask, weilding a chainsaw! The Friday the 13th people might consider suing Artisan (after all, they've got dough now), but then, that might bring more attention to this crappy picture.

I feel bad giving this one the review it deserves, because I listened to some of director Ralph Portillo's commentary on the DVD, and he seems like a decent enough guy. I write in my spare time, and I know how involving the creative process can be. So if I'm ever published, you all can take your shots at me. Here goes, in list form, what I thought about this flicker:

  • Dialogue: Dumb and repetitive. Stupid and redundant.
  • Blocking: Unnatural. Some scenes looked like a Junior High School play.
  • Acting: Gotta admit, some of the actors were decent. Then again, others sucked eggs.
  • Camera placement: Uninspired, to say the least.
  • Blood effects: The makeup people were trying to make us laugh, much less gross us out.
  • Continuity: Spotty. Eg, "How do you scrape your knee when you land on your back?"
  • The plot rips off:
    • The Friday the 13th series (the setting, the hockey mask, and just about everything else)
    • Evil Dead II (the chainsaw-hand that pops up at one point)
    • Scream (the characters)
    • More, which I could list, but I'd rather quit this and prepare my review of Curtain Call.

Most frustratingly, the movie doesn't just try to confuse us about the identity of the killer; it seems to change its own mind about the matter. Now, I can't even remember who did it. Oops, don't care, either. (Apr 18, 2001)
