Here, you have a well-known cult movie, tongue-in-cheek in tone and ridiculed by the public and critics, that passes into obscurity. Then, several years later, a television show with the same story, created by the same person, becomes a hit, praised for its mixture of real-life drama, supernatural intrigue, and a more sardonic, perhaps less eye-winking humor than its big-screen sister.
So the Kristy Swanson Buffy has moved into the background, and I can see the reasons for that. The movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an enjoyable film, one that seems self-aware at some points, and yet at other times is marked by the same silly humor that brought down many an eighties comedy. In that vein--sorry--the villains in Buffy are not given enough screen time and, in Paul Reubens's case, are just too silly to be effective. However, the movie is not without teenage-angst overtones, as light as they are, and I appreciated the film's stabs at Carrie toward the end. Lastly, say what you want about Sarah Michelle Gellar, and she is a good Buffy, but Kristy Swanson can kick ass just as convincingly.
