Part of me doesn't like giving a movie like Premonition (its original title is Convergence) a poor review. When I give a blatant rip-off like The St. Francisville Experiment two stars and a knowingly trashy flick like Idle Hands more than that, it pains me to not reward a film like Premonition, one that tries to do something of import. It's a film that tries to tell a story, that tries, really, just to be about something. But it all comes down to effect (and affect); does the film do what it wants to do, and does it connect with its audience? In the case of Premonition, I'm forced to say "no." It expands on the ideas put forth in Harvey's Carnival of Souls, but the damn thing is so scattershot that it collapses upon itself. Scenes seem to exist on their own, and little attempt appears to have been made to fuse them into a linear whole. Once, when the characters started to cogitate on destiny's interaction with human existence, the film captivated me, but then it passed into the region that might be referred to online as TMI--Too Much Information. A mystic explanation of the film's events might be corny, but it's interesting. You start making goofy shit up, and you lose part of your audience. Still, this film features one of Christopher Lloyd's best performances and some nice cinematography. If director Gavin Wilding's creative impulses are reigned in a bit, I look forward to good work from him. (Oct 29, 2001)
