A sweet and nostalgic romantic comedy that doesn't just go through the motions. Curtain Call asks us to care about the characters, and the film does indeed deserve the kind of attention it seeks. Though the writing for Polly Walker is on the weak side--she's too much of a shrewish stereotype--this shortcoming is rendered forgettable by the care given to the other characters, both by the writer and by the actors playing them. Michael Caine is downright jovial as one of the two earthbound spirits, and he's matched perfectly by Maggie Smith (she reminds me of my grandmother, actually). The heart of this film, however, is James Spader, who gives a more likable performance than I thought he was capable of. Sweet and unforced, Curtain Call is well worth a look. (Apr 18, 2001)
