This film was a TV movie of the popular BBC TV series that ended seven years previously. As many episodes of that series did, this film incorporates a lot of the elements of horror. The film has a brilliant atmosphere and the music score is truly creepy at times. The film makes full use of the streets of San Francisco where it is set for some billiant set pieces, but the small scenes deliver the real scares. The possession of the ambulence driver Bruce is quite nasty as the alien snake dives down his throat as he snores in his sleep. The acting is first rate, with Paul McGann taking up the title role excellently and Sylvester McCoy giving a good farewell preformance. Daphne Ashbrook is also on par with the other performances, but the show is stolen by Eric Roberts, who is truly brilliant as The Master. Though it has atmosphere and excellent actors, the plot is not very tight and lets them down; if the scirpt had been better, it would have gained a star or even two. Nonetheless, this is good, creepy entertainment for horror and science-fiction fans alike. Who knows, perhaps if the plotting had been tighter, then it would have led to a new TV show.
