Simon Belmont, vampire hunter, must brave the perils of Dracula's castle and defeat the bloodsucker.

This relatively early NES game was upstaged by the games that followed it, to be sure, but it's still a solid action game that established the concepts the series would follow. That is, the creepiness, freaky creatures, and interesting gameplay. It is also one of the best (and unfortunately rare) examples of effective atmosphere on the NES. The gameplay is a little creaky, and the timed levels a bit tiresome on occasion--sometimes I want to let a game soak in and not be forced through it--but its fast pace uses the time limits to its advantage in terms of action. Followed by Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES) and Super Castlevania IV (SNES). Other games in the series have, will be, or were rumored to be produced for the Game Boy (The Castlevania Adventure, Castlevania: Belmont's Revenge, and Castlevania Legends), Nintendo (Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness), Playstation (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), Sega Saturn (Castlevania: Nocturne in the Moonlight), and other game systems.
