Inherent Evil had the makings of a really good game, but it seems as though for every two things the game does well, it does three things badly. The best thing about Inherent Evil is undoubtedly its atmosphere--the slightly unreal graphics, effective use of shadows, and creepy minimalist music all come together to provide an engrossing experience. On the other hand, the acting is absolutely terrible, the gameplay falls a bit short of intuitive, and most of the scare tactics--a skull surfacing in a bowl of blood? a floating hall table?--fall flat. (One notable exception is a great sequence in the dining room, one that begins with reading the words "Are you afraid of the dark?" written on a tablecloth. You might imagine what happens next.) Effective as an excercise in atmosphere, not so hot as a game. (Nov 3, 2000) | |
