After an accident in which he loses his right hand, people around cartoonist Jon Lansdale start being murdered. Lansdale eventually comes to the conclusion that his lost hand has gained a life of its own and is responsible. Is he right--or just insane?

Is the main character right, or is he insane? Either way, the filmmakers don't know what they want to do with this movie. It might have worked as a character drama--the characters' motives are interesting enough--but there isn't much scary or, failing that, funny about The Hand's approach to its own idea. Michael Caine and company try valiantly, to their credit, and Oliver Stone's directing keeps the film strangely classy, but it's too aimless to be very effective. (1999/Feb 5, 2002) | ||||||
