A Halloween rip-off that actually manages, every once in a while, to rise above its similarly-minded peers and stop being stupid. The blood and gore flow as teenagers meet their gruesome demises one at a time at the hand (well, sort of) of a hook-handed killer. Some of the acting isn't half-bad, and director Jon Ward manages, every once in a while, to stage a surprise or effective startle (and I haven't even mentioned the comically gruesome end Scary Movie's Anna Farris finds). The plot manages to be a little clever, but not very; in short, it's a lot of noise and screaming, but it's barely watchable. (Jan 7, 2001)
