Nomads is a good film with a great one trapped inside, screaming to get out. The way director John McTiernan blends realities is complex and intriguing, and the film maintains an enigmatic atmosphere from the first stark shots to the effectively creepy ending. However, the writing, also by McTiernan, doesn't sufficiently illuminate the nature of the nomads. Who they are, what they are capable of, how they are perceived by people. I realize that's part of their nature, and I don't want a horror such as this movie presents us to be totally expained, but just a little more exposition would have improved the nomads' effectiveness as an evil force. Well worth watching--to my mind, anyway--if only for the atmosphere and visuals. (Nov 30, 1999) | ||||||
