Director Mario Bava lends this film a moderately thick gothic atmosphere, but his directing is at times too aggressive for the material. The writing and acting are passable, though Elke Sommer seems to be in the film only to run in terror and to look good in a miniskirt. Indeed, one of the chase scenes seems to be in the film merely to stretch it out--it winds up looking like an excercise in expressionistic lighting and not having any real point or purpose. This film is worth taking a look at (and I mean the movie, not necessarily Ms. Sommer) but lacking in depth. (Oct 31, 1999/Nov 1, 1999) | ||||||
