A blatant satire of American consumer culture, The Stuff isn't as gross--and is just plain better--than you probably think it'd be. Deep, it's not. Through both its nature and through direct reference, The Stuff is merely an entertaining eighties take on a fifties monster movie. Larry Cohen capably combines satirical humor and horror in this film; this is one of those happy instances in which I truly didn't know whether, to use the old chestnut, to laugh or scream. The Stuff also features excellent dialogue, delivered by a talented cast. Garrett Morris has barely more than a cameo, but it's not nearly enough, and Paul Sorvino sadly only appears toward the end of the film. They're all eclipsed, though, by Michael Moriarty, who in playing a slimy, opportunistic character has created a small gem of a performance.
