When I watched this film, I was astounded by two things--one, the complete vapidity of the plot. There's really nothing going on here, or at least nothing that hasn't been explored a whole lot of times, notably in Rosemary's Baby. But there there's "thing" number two--the incredible cinematography and lighting. Dario Argento and his people have turned a banal story into a visual marvel that works as a precursor to Kubrick's Shining--similar stark colors, but more pronounced. Argento, I'm sure, set out to make a uniquely expressionistic horror film, and it worked. Just don't think too hard about the story and wonder at the sights instead. (Aug 26, 1999) | ||||||
