The first Firestarter is about a girl and her father on the run from a government agency that wants the girl for her mental power--the ability to create fires with her mind. Reviewer Jack Witzig found it moderately interesting, though irretrievably dated in terms of a conspiracy thriller. However, he praised some of the performances and the originality of the character played by George C. Scott.

The sequel to Firestarter picks up a decade after the events of the first movie, with one of the villains of the first piece tracking down pyrokinetic Charlie McGee and pitting her against children as psychically strong as she is. Jack Witzig thought the film was unfaithful to the story and tone of the original, was potted with plot holes and poorly thought-out characters, and was about an hour longer than it needed to be.
