Even if its lonely atmosphere and Vincent Price's performance were the only things The Last Man on Earth had going for it, it'd be a better adaptation of Richard Matheson's remarkable I am Legend than the ugly Omega Man. Although The Last Man on Earth makes several unnecessary changes to Matheson's story, and throws the book's pacing off by compressing the book into an hour and a half, it maintains relatively true to the tone Matheson set with his writing. The lead role in this film is a different part for Price, and he's good; unfortunately, the script doesn't examine his motivations as much as it should. The movie ends in a scene that begins as being overly expositional and then devolves into a chase scene with a finale that reminded me uncomfortably of The War of the Worlds. Gripes aside, this is involving and well-made, and as good an adaptation of Matheson's remarkable book as we have so far.
